Can you legally work in Australia on a visitor visa? What’s allowed and what’s not
Alice Laurence, Special Counsel • May 28, 2026
Many people travelling to Australia on a visitor visa assume they can undertake some form of work while they are here. However, Australian migration laws place strict limitations on what visitor visa holders can and cannot do.
Understanding the distinction between permitted activities and unlawful work is important for anyone visiting Australia for tourism, family visits or short-term business purposes.
What is a visitor visa?
Depending on the visitor visa stream, these visas generally allow a person to travel to Australia temporarily for purposes such as:
- tourism or holidays
- visiting family or friends
- short-term business visitor activities.
Common visitor visas include the visitor visa (Subclass 600) (tourist, family sponsored or business stream), Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (Subclass 601), and eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651).
Can you work on a visitor visa?
In most cases, the answer is no.
Visitor visas are generally granted on the condition that the holder does not engage in work while in Australia. Even unpaid arrangements may create legal issues if the activity resembles employment or provides a commercial benefit to a business.
What happens if you breach your visa conditions?
Working unlawfully on a visitor visa can lead to significant consequences, including:
- visa cancellation
- removal from Australia
- future visa refusals
- restrictions on returning to Australia.
Australian authorities take visa compliance seriously, and even short-term or casual work can potentially place a visitor in breach of their visa conditions.
Are there visas that allow work?
Yes. Australia offers a range of visas that permit employment, depending on the person’s circumstances.
Examples include:
- temporary Skill Shortage visas
- working Holiday visas
- student visas with work rights
- employer sponsored visas.
Each visa category carries different eligibility requirements and work limitations.
