Illawarra Domestic Violence charges surge after NSW Police arrest over 900
Harry Webb, Lawyer • May 27, 2026
A major NSW Police operation targeting domestic violence (DV) offenders has led to 993 arrests, more than 2,000 charges, and the seizure of nearly 100 firearms in just four days.
The statewide blitz, part of Operation Amarok, also uncovered hundreds of breaches of apprehended domestic violence orders (ADVOs) and involved thousands of compliance checks.
Increased Policing in the Illawarra
For residents across the Illawarra region, this crackdown reflects a clear shift, with police taking a zero-tolerance approach to domestic violence allegations and breaches.
Charges arising from these operations commonly include:
- Assault and intimidation
- Breaching an ADVO
- Stalking and coercive control
- Firearms and weapons offences
Many accused individuals are refused bail and required to attend court immediately, facing serious penalties that can include imprisonment.
Accused of a DV Offence? Act fast
Being charged, or even investigated, for a domestic violence matter can have immediate consequences, including:
- Removal from your home
- No-contact orders affecting family or partners
- Impact on child access arrangements
- Long-term criminal records.
In high-pressure police operations like this, decisions are made quickly. Getting early legal advice can be critical to protecting your rights and your future.
An experienced criminal defence lawyer can:
- Challenge weak or exaggerated allegations
- Represent you in bail applications and urgent court hearings
- Defend or vary ADVOs
- Work to have charges reduced or dismissed.
